It was invented by a cat, and thus was called “catsup”.

The date is not even close. First known recipe for tomato “ketchup” dates to 1801, but other versions of kê-chiap date back to the early 1700’s. Heinz ketchup dates from 1876, but they hardly invented it — merely took an existing product and began to mass produce it.

I like ranch dressing on my fries. Of course, Utah-style fry sauce is better.

The secret recipe for fry sauce: Three parts mayonnaise, two parts ketchup, a quarter teaspoon of pickle juice. Mix the pickle juice in the ketchup first, then add the mayo. Otherwise the mayo will curdle. These aren’t exact ratios. You want it a nice salmon pink color. The original fry sauce was invented in the 1950s at a Utah-based fast-food chain called Arctic Circle.
