In college hockey, it isn’t. You not only get a game misconduct for fighting, you’re then suspended for one game or more, depending on how many game misconducts you’ve accrued that season.
I grew up watching minor league hockey and fans considered fighting a part of the game, but it wasn’t endemic. The advent of the “Broad Street Bullies” era in the Seventies introduced fighting as a tactic and it nearly ruined the sport. I don’t mind an occasional fight, but I much prefer watching NCAA games on TV because the best hockey is about the skating, puckhandling and passing.
