The fallacy in that notion is the thought that the stores will “lose” sales if they don’t put up the Christmas decorations before Halloween. People who want to do their shopping early will do their shopping early, no matter what decorations are up in the stores. People who wait to the last minute are STILL going to wait to the last minute no matter what decorations are up in the stores. It’s a sad testament to our society that we can’t put up a Christmas display in the park, or decorations up in our schools like we did when we were kids without getting the ACLU up in arms, but the stores are free to offend everybody by putting up Christmas decorations before the leaves have even fallen from the trees…

You can put decorations in front of your house, your church, and any other property you own. And municipal properties frequently have holiday decorations — they just don’t have religious decorations. So how is that a “sad testament to our society”? I think it’s a GREAT testament to our society that we are finally beginning to pull the wool of superstition away from our eyes.

I went through exactly this last year when I tried to find Thanksgiving decorations. They had lots of Halloween and lots of Christmas, but little to no Thanksgiving anywhere, not even in the craft stores.

Store managers don’t have anything to do with it. The warehouse plusses you out a truckload of christmas stuff (or summer stuff) for the christmas set, which the nonfoods manager has to deal with. The nonfoods manager gets the schematics from corporate (through email, he has no choice in the matter because they send it to him and then check up to see if he’s done it). So maybe talk to the corporate managers, cause store level people have next to no say in these things.

My first task at Sears, on October 12, 1987, was to help the Hardware manager replace the garden tools with Christmas merchandise.
