For a while (now mercifully gone) our state used to disallow schools to start before Labor Day. Seems certain businesses lost too many of their low cost workers and claimed it was bad for tourism.
Now that there’s so many different choices for schools they start at all different times. An early college in my little section of OH started Aug 6, my 16 year old and college freshman started on the 21st, my 8 year old started this past Mon and my 12 year old starts Tues.

When I was a kid we always went back the Thursday before Labor Day. Two days on, then three days off – I think it was some kind of shock treatment.
