I wonder if any of those solutions would work for Southern California freeways.

The pneumatic tube idea has recently been revived in all seriousness. A cross country bullet train powered by compressed air, traveling faster than sound. Why not?

The system, called the Hyperloop, is an Elon Musk Project. This is the same guy who is bringing cargo to and from the space station cheaper than the Russians are willing to, and will soon be delivering crews.http://www.ibtimes.com/tesla-motors-tsla-ceo-elon-musk-reveal-hyperloop-futuristic-transportation-system-design-expected-be

I find it amusing to see that, by 1896, people had apparently forgotten the original NYC subway, Ely Beach’s Beach Pneumatic Transit Company of 1870, had been forgotten. (It’s not clear how successful it might have been; it was killed by politics.)
