The catch-phrase of my generation was “Never trust anyone over thirty”, as if one’s life as a rational, reasonable person ended then. As for me, when I turned thirty, I threw a party for all the kids who worked at the horse ranch where I boarded my horse—I wanted them to know that thirty was a great age to be. And so was forty, and fifty, and sixty! And next year I’ll celebrate seventy with the same joy and optimism. Poor Adam. His dislike of birthdays is as sad as it is funny, but I’ve known real people with the same attitude, and they are just sad. Life is too precious to regret the passing of even a single minute. Celebrate every one of them!

I regard people as children up to the age of 35 but having just had my 60th birthday, I realise that nobody ever grows up (thankfully).

And don’t forget the “Coffee Cacophony” of ’13.
