I didn’t get an opportunity to respond to various comments in “prime time” yesterday, so hopefully folks will look at my comments last evening and I’ll conclude with the following:

Sheesh! I feel badly if my words were misunderstood, but how about reading what I actually wrote. Nowhere did I say to keep repeating something, or that a child shouldn’t strive&continue to strive for achievement.

And If you believe EVERY child gets praise from their parents, or is treated as though they are special, google John Croyle Sports Illustrated 1987 and read the article. John’s updated efforts in this area are even more amazing.

I don’t see that I wrote that someone should “over-encourage” or make their child feel they are good at something when they are not? And every parent ought to have significant, age-appropriate conversations that help their kids navigate this often dangerous and sometimes perverse world. The defense rests!

@Wiseguy1130Ah, yes. Now THAT I can agree with. And let me rephrase what I said about every child receiving praise from their parents; Yes, there are some children who get abused and treated wrongly by their parents. I just meant that, usually, that is not the case. I was talking about an average child. I have come across many children in my day, and most of them have been told by their parents in some way that they are special, unique. Which of course they are but technically everyone is different from one another and we are all special. As I said in my previous comment “The better thing to do is to let them know what their strengths are, but focus on improving weaknesses.”

Now I want some Cheezies. Sigh.
