Mouth pieces don’t protect well against fast-moving pucks. A lot of players don’t wear mouth pieces because a puck can take out a row of teeth instead of a single one when a mouth piece is used.
At 5’7", Gump Worsley‘s face was often below the crossbar, yet he didn’t wear a mask until the last 6 of his 931 NHL games. Though I don’t remember him having a beard, and certainly not a helmet, the strip’s image made me think of him.

Now you know why I’m not posting. The only thing I understand about hockey is that they fight a lot.
