Pretty low even for Payne. The twit probably hasn’t noticed that the typical first class letter will be delivered anywhere in the US within 2 days. Pretty good deal for $.45
As long as we expect the USPS to be self-sustaining, we’re going to continue the spiral of rising costs and reduced service.
The Postal Service SHOULD be subsidized, like local (i.e. non-profitable) bus and train lines, since it still provides a necessary service for those who can’t afford other options.
I wonder what the response would be from Republicans (the people, not their elected leaders) if the post office shut down and they had to pay a few dollars to UPS or FedEx for every letter they sent.*It is no coincidence that UPS gave the GOP a lot of money back in 2006 (when they had both houses of Congress), and then the GOP Congress forced the post office to fund retirement in advance for the next 75 years.
Jack, here are the facts: $11 billion of the $15.9 billion the US Post Office “lost on paper” was not actually lost. Congress made them pay it into their retirement fund 75 years in advance.*True, they still lost $4.9 billion, but lots of companies have lost money in this poor economy. The only reason the US Post Office seems to have been singled out is because Congress singled them out after huge campaign contributions by UPS.
Perhaps not…..….but I and others who rely on the USPS will be crying. I will be crying for all the lost history that Stamps have shown me down through the years (I have a 100+ year old stamp that’s worth about $800 used ) as well as paying UPS for Netflix’s DVDs for more $ than the service is worth…. I like the way things are as I collect stamps and get better quality of picture by getting the DVDs via USPS (probably their biggest customer year-round) than via streaming..An example of History: Rosa Parks (forever) stamp

Congressmen must be making big profits by killing the Post Office. What other organization has to fund 75 years of pensions in 10 years.

First-class postage stamps increased to 46 cents on January 27, 2013. I just bought some today and found out about it.
