The only problem is that we let way too many sneak in and give them WAY too much when they do.Close the border, kick the lawbreakers out and have them wait behind the honest people that deserve to come in after waiting for years. If libs want to pay for illegals healthcare, rent and food then they should adopt them.

All the conservative stereotypes about illegal immigrants are true — in some cases. And false - on other cases. An acquaintance came in legally many years ago. She has no connection any longer with the country of her birth, South Africa, where she has not been since a child. Though on an extended visa, through an oversight, and while she thought she was applying for permanent status, her visa lapsed. At that moment she became illegal. She is married to an American citizen, but her marriage is not recognized by federal law (DOMA). She earns her own living, pays taxes, but does not dare to claim any benefits. Her only means of becoming legal is to leave her wife, return to South Africa for ten years, and then hope she can get another visa to return. -——- No she is not remotely typical. But tarring 10,000,000 people with the same brush, and providing no relief for person like her is grossly unjust. -— It is estimated that half the illegal immigrants in this country came here legally. They did not sneak across a border, they arrived with a passport and a visa through an airport. Many are students who came here to study and could not resist the temptation to stay in a country they found good. - Still others were brought here as children and know no other country. - In the days of our Founding Fathers, no one was turned away at America’s doors. One of the accusations made against King George in the Declaration of Independence was that he discouraged immigration to the colonies, and put barriers in the way of people coming here. - Every nation today needs to control its borders, no one questions that. But the bigoted, xenophobic, jealous, and vindictive attitude of many is unjustified. Other crimes have statutes of limitation. We do not confiscate the driver’s license of every person who speeds. - My friend is willing to pay a (reasonable) penalty for her mistake in order to become a citizen of the country where she has lived all the 20 years of her adult life. There is no reason on earth not to provide her the means to do so. America was conceived as an island of liberty in a sea of oppression, a place where anyone could come. Maybe that was impractical or has become so, but I always remember these words from Tom Paine’s Common Sense: “O ye that love mankind! Ye that dare oppose, not only the tyranny, but the tyrant, stand forth! Every spot of the old world is overrun with oppression. Freedom hath been hunted round the globe. Asia, and Africa, have long expelled her. Europe regards her like a stranger, and England hath given her warning to depart. O! receive the fugitive, and prepare in time an asylum for mankind.”

And unless they manage to somehow get a SS#, they are NOT getting federal/state benefits, but relying on charities/men of good will to keep them alive. And our insurance premiums when hospitals treat them. This is about more than the little brown-skinned folk who come in, or do you object because that’s all you see? We have many “whites”, and others, who have/had temporary visas yet stayed here when those expired. We also have many legals who have obtained degrees, want to stay here, yet wait YEARS, and even have to return home and wait, before our broken immigration program gets them in. Congress has known about this for years, but doesn’t/won’t give guidance to fix it. Executive orders can only do so much. If the House, as they are already signalling, votes this down, the Repubs will remain a minority party for years.

McCain listed lawnkeepers, housekeepers, migrant farmers, and babysitters as people who would benefit from immigration reform aka amnesty with strings. I never understood why after Reagan’s amnesty program, states and the federal gov’t didn’t crack down on illegal hiring of those in the country illegally. It laid the groundwork for what we are dealing with today. I am very happy that the children of illegal residents have a chance to be true members of this nation and to apply skills learned in school and college to help our nation.btw – as presented by the 8 senators yesterday, this immigration reform can be blocked by Gov’s of states bordering Mexico if they are unsatisfied with border security. Jan Brewer of Az is already speaking against the bill and…even conserves should be concerned about this…Even tho Az law only allows a Gov to serve 2 consecutive terms, Ms. Brewer is considering a third run for office.^ http://www.azcentral.com/news/politics/free/20121210arizona-governor-brewer-bennett-block-filing-third-term.html^I’m on record for giving a President the line item veto, but do not think the law should go into effect until the next presidential term begins. I feel the same way about adding a third term to a governor. If you want to do it, fine, but it should not benefit a sitting governor.Respectfully,C.

I just don’t trust Republicans and think there must be some sinister angle to what they are doing.

We now have well over 12 million AMERICANS that are unemployed and you want to add over 11 million to the already scarce job market? That will only hurt the “working poor” that many of you say you want to help. Those 8-12 dollar an hour jobs will become minimum wage because business will only pay what they have to. Just like you will only pay for a TV what you have to. If the store down the road has the same TV for $50 less, then you will buy it there. If there’s all of a sudden millions of people willing to work for $5 dollars an hour, that’s who will get hired. Btw Those of you crying racism, the only mention of skin color has come from you. Who’s the racist?

It would be so wonderful to see the bi-partisan work they may decide to do now!If your family was truly starving in the USA, how many of us would go to Canada to find work. I do hope this means compassion and fair play.and a new spirit of putting differences aside and acting together the way we used to do. It wasn’t exactly the “good old days” but at least the 2 parties could play well with others.

“… paying for a month of ins and then cancelling it…” In Florida, the Insurance company notifies the State and the State cancels your drivers license and car registration and issues a warrant to confiscate your car and arrest you if you are driving. You can expect that the parking meter maid will see your car and have it towed. The State Troopers are running License Plate Numbers as they drive amongst us and pull over ‘hits’.
