Unfortunately, I can remember my parents saying those things about me, and I’d think, “Yeah, they say that…but they HAVE to; they’re my parents.” The other kids at school certainly didn’t think I was any of those things…and they’re out in the REAL world and don’t have to, so what they say must be true. Yeah, I was a stupid child.
It is better to praise people for specific achievements instead of a general quality. Say “You did a great job on that Book Report” instead of “You are so smart”.
I think parents are pretty special supportive people, but it seems like children. like me, think they are picking on us when the point our our flaws and lying to us when the point out our good points. Children are pretty complicated until they come parents themselves. Then they are just like their own parents, however that is.
A friend told me how when she was 13 and whined to her mother about how she knew she was fat and ugly, her mother did not respond with a bland “You’re pretty.” Instead she stood her in front of a mirror and pointed out every one of her good features. She never forgot that.
