What is an assault weapon? Any weapon that can kill or injure can be considered an assault weapon! A knife is an assault weapon, a car can be considered an assault weapon. Do you mean assault rifle? Please stop purposely using misleading language!

“Have any gun owners actually said they use assault rifles to hunt with? If so, would an assault rifle do that much damage?”-I knew a guy on my second ship who had an M-14 (semi-auto) that he used for hunting. It shoots a .308 round, and he said it was perfect for deer. If it was put in full auto, the 14 will pump out the same rounds, not something that would disentegrate large portions of flesh like depicted. To do that, you’d have to get different ammo. But in full auto, the rifle tends to elevate, making it dificult to stay on target, not a good thing for someone trying to bring down an animal for food. Fully auto is impractical for hunting, and designed for one thing: Putting out lots of rounds to kill lots of people. It’s also incredibly inefficient on the battlefield. The bullet-to-kill ratios in Vietnam, where autos were common, were astronomical, versus WWII, where the average infantry had semi-auto weapons.

Hey, what’s the problem? The animals should have hired armed guards just like the schools.

The cartoon does present a legitimate statement that most hunters already know. You don’t need a cannon or a minigun to hunt. The NRA is really being foolish, but I’m sure Mr. LaPierre is hearing from gun makers who are afraid sales and stock share will suffer if they are unable sell military grade weapons and high capacity clips. One of my neighbors remembered us talking a couple of years ago and I had told him I had a shotgun my grandfather had given me when I was a child…he asked if I still had it. I do, and he didn’t smile at my answer. Maybe I should have told him I hadn’t any ammo for it in the house in four years? We really need to find middle ground here.Respectfully,& Have a Happy Safe New Year’s Eve!C.

“So you are suggesting we ban all semi automatics?”.I’ve heard that argument. Then again, I’ve been told that Canada bans semi-autos (it doesn’t, they’re not even restricted). As CasualBrowser pointed out, automatic weapons are only for one purpose, and gangbangers love them because they can’t shoot worth s**t..Perhaps instead of banning things left right and centre, we should look at why the US has such a culture of fear. Where people think they need to hide behind guns, and where people think the only way they can deal with their frustrations is to kill themselves and quite possibly take as many out with them as they can.

Newtown, CT is home to the National Sport Shooting Foundation, their motto, “To promote, protect and preserve hunting and the shooting sports”.The town was having noise complaints of automatic weapons fire and tannerite explosions near homes this year. The police said they were powerless to stop it. …………………….http://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/17/nyregion/in-newtown-conn-a-stiff-resistance-to-gun-restrictions.html?ref=nyregion&r=1&pagewanted=all&……………………..……………………..Here is one of many tannerite videos on youtube………………………..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fgH8oWgU8I

A 12 gauge, with 00 buckshot can also do what’s illustrated in the toon, without even going to the drum magazine extreme of the “Streetsweeper” semi-auto, which should NOT be in “civilian” hands.

BTW, every M-14 I ever had, would jam. I had several 16’s with the “bad reputation”, and never had a misfire. I also followed Colt’s instruction manual that said DO NOT grease the bolt, as it will carbonize and freeze. The Marines, being “old school” insisted on greasing the bolts, despite instructions, and that was the heart of the “jamming problem” they had with the weapon in ’Nam.

But, let’s issue Barrett 50s and RPGs to deer hunters and stop all the whining! Oh, right, also give them whisk brooms and trash bags to collect their game after a successful hunt.

Robert, the standard military Winchester, or a Remington 700 BDL with bull barrel is also highly accurate, bolt action, and can reach out and “touch someone”. And yes, as posted many times, I agree with your conclusion.

Sigh. The comic suggests Mike knows nothing about assault weapons or hunting. He has bought into the politically incorrect misnomer the media uses. Such a waste of talent.

Of course, reality is a foreign language to liberals… the most common so called “assault weapon” caliber is .223……… a very very small bullet. And the standard round is full metal jacket, that makes a single hole going in and a single one going out… compared to a hunting round that expands inside the body.

This argument is so old…an’ so unresolved…we pass laws that might have a chance of some semblance of ‘gun control’ and they are $electively enforced, if at all.I strongly support the 2nd Amendment of our Constitution. If the citizenry loses the right to bear arms, then the only ones that will have arms will be the criminals and the government – but I repeat myself… ;o) .I have a problem with the average person owning such weapons of mass and indiscriminate killing as the “uzi” and similar handheld, high-capacity weaponry. No realistic argument can be made for having such a weapon in the nightstand drawer, or the kitchen cupboard. They hardly require much aiming, and the bullet spray literally shreds through whoever or whatever is unfortunate enough to be in the way. This type of weaponry in the hands of untrained, unskilled private citizens can be a recipe for disaster – as we have seen. However, this type of weaponry can play an effective role in military and law enforcement operations, but it has no place in the typical private American homeIn a free society which has more guns than people, we will NEVER be 100% successful in preventing such tragic and senseless murders of innocents as took place in Newtown, CT. We can’t stop trying, of course…but the Constitutionally-guaranteed right and freedom of citizens to bear arms comes with a price. Sadly, all freedom comes with a price, and Americans have always paid it. To do otherwise would be to follow the path of communist and fascist regimes which allow few if any freedoms to their citizens. They have far fewer gun-related crimes – but what a price they pay in the wholesale sacrifice of their freedoms. As an example of how the Nazis seized control of Germany so quickly and thoroughly in the early Thirties is that one of Hitler’s first orders was to round up all the guns in the hands of the citizens…the process was swift and very thorough. This removed the primary means of the citizenry to fight back against Nazi oppression. Of course, the knowledge that they could an’ would be killed on the spot at the first sign of resistance was also key to keeping the populace in line, so to speak.Every time such a tragedy as Newtown occurs, the debate begins anew. Yes, more DOES need to be done to prevent unbalanced individuals from such easy access to guns of any kind…But BEWARE the government that speaks of collecting up the guns owned by private citizens. It seems that virtually every move to make us safer also makes us less free. We must be vigilant against those who would enslave us in the guise of protecting us. Recent and current administrations have shown a dismissive attitude towards certain parts of our Constitution. Our Constitution and Bill of Rights are where our freedoms are enshrined – if we should lose those, America – as we know an’ love it – would cease to exist.
