I believe Raymond saw Louie wanting to romance a female dog actress. He liked him and tried to help him out and decided to stay with him and our crew. Raymond could also liase between the cute meeces and the rest of the crew.

I would have to go back and look through my MANY OVERBOARD SCRAPBOOKS to remember how Raymond came to talk, but I DO REMEMBER he was part of the Green Ship Crew, belonged to Cecilia, chain smoked cigarettes, was a “hustler”, and I remember Louie falling in love with that BEAUTIFUL LAB, following her, getting lost, etc.

HOW’S THAT CHIP? AND I DIDN’T GOOGLE ONE BIT OF IT!
