There are a LOT of people helping victims. It is a “mixed thing” to hold he marathon, but if transportation, etc, can keep up with the crush, I see the reason for the mayor saying this event shows “We’re here, and we don’t quit!”

Give Summers a break! The strip was probably drawn and in the pipeline before the last minute cancellation.

Among first responders, neighbors climbing 10+ floors to help neighbors who can’t leave homes, and so many others, I have on my list of heroes the hotel managers who have refused to evict storm survivors in order to make room for marathon runners.I saw a man who was complaining the city had not canceled soon enough. How can you look at the scenes of destruction and loss in this area and actually consider going to the event? I understand the training and money involved, but still….Any marathoners reading this, I have a suggestion. Use those muscular legs and that incredible endurance to carry water and food up flights of stairs to sick, old, and disabled people trapped without supplies. Thousands planned to run, only a few dozen had any real chance to do anything more than participate. Be a hero. Carry some water for a neighbor. It is good the marathon had been canceled. There will be more times for marathons.Respectfully,C.

If people insist on running in New York, let them run supplies to people who need them.

The decision to cancel should have been a no brainer from the start.

The response by FEMA in NY has been horrible. 5hour lines for gas, looting and no food, water or electricity. Another O failure.

Marathoners did deliver supplies in backpacks to Staten Island and do their runs vertically to people in high-rises who needed help. http://bigstory.ap.org/article/ny-marathon-canceled-tell-runners-0#overlay-context=article/2012-campaign-nears-finish-2016-lurks
