“No, seriously, the lack of respect for the moderator and the format, especially by Mr. Romney was appalling. But the questions by Mr. Lehrer were also lame.”We need to go back to the League of Women Voters moderated debates.

After all, Lehrer and Big Bird both work for PBS.

How about the next moderator have a mic kill button for the debaters? And use it.

C Downs: I agree in all seriousness. Stewart is smart, alert, and wouldn’t let either get away with running over the process with B.S.. He’d call them with intelligent barbs, and add both intelligence, and “entertainment value”.

To get really good, honest debates, we need a moderator who is a communications expert in area of propaganda and verbal deception. This expert would be the comparative equivalent of James Randi in regard to matters of pseudo-science, magic, and general flim-flam. After all, a political hack and a scientific quack use similar techniques..And no high-paid entertainers, please. Jon Stewart and Steve Colbert are humorous, but all things considered they’re each just a professional smart-ass. No doubt they have writing teams that provides material for them. I think they’re wise enough to know that they would embarrass themselves by relying solely on wit. They would perform a disservice to the nation even to try. Let them stay on their respective programs. .When the time comes we allow people like them to moderate serious debates, we’ll know we’ve sunk as low as is possible for a free society. It would be democracy just for laughs. (It’s almost that way now.) By then everything sold would be s—- on a stick, and we’d elect presidents in the matter of “American Idol.”.And William F. Buckley as moderator? People wouldn’t know what he was talking about most of the time. He could be so incredibly abstruse on “Firing Line.” He extruded long tangled streams of verbal barbed wire, and sometimes entangled even himself. But if we do bring him back to moderate (through whatever scientific necromancy), let’s also bring back Gore Vidal. Remember them together in 1968?
