Cathy: In honor of mother's day week, let's take a deep breath and just enjoy each other's company, mom! Mom: What a lovely idea! Cathy: Sigh... Mom: You could get an even DEEPER breath if you pulled your shoulders back, sweetie. Cathy: Excuse me?? Mom: Here! Pull your tummy in, too. Cathy: WHAT?? Mom: Shoulders back! Tummy in! Chin up and... Cathy: MOTHER!! Mom: There! Much better! Now THAT'S a nice, deep breath!

With my dad it was always, “pull back your hair off of your face” and “pull your shirt sleeves back off of your hands”.

So who is the irritating one? The one doing things wrong or the one trying to correct her unnecessarily? This is why Dad’s need tools and a garage.

I would have just enjoyed my time with my daughter, but this is Cathy and her mom so…. And I guess Cathy used her deep breath on bellowing “Mother!!” Time for another deep breath, Cathy. This one is for stress relief though.
Hello Cathy friends! Happy Monday! Have a great day, all!

Some mothers just cannot stop being overly motherly. My daughters (and I) are on the receiving end of ‘advice’ just like Cathy is.
Is it Monday already? There went another too fast weekend. Enjoy your day!

Just listening to Deborah Tannen talking about this form of “communication” between mothers and daughters yesterday. Mothers see it as their responsibility to make their daughters meet standards of perfection (and my own anthropological expertise tells me that it is because they need to find husbands, but Cathy is already married, so Mom could relax it a little.)
