You can put those words in the mouth of Socrates, Plato, Schopenhauer, Shakespeare Gandhi or Lord Bacon, and they would be quite correct and appropriate in threre…
Welcome The Mortal you will find comments just or more entertaining at times then the strip. It’s fun commenting here.
All children need homework. In Calvin’s case going out and playing first will use some of that energy then he can setle down to work since the day will be going through to night and sometimes what seems like a lot of homework is not.
The last panel was obviously drawn for the t-shirt and coffee mug industries. A bit cynical perhaps, but wistfully kute kartooning is a business like any other and I hope Watterson collected serious royalties on it. Love means never having to say you’re sorry, after all… and love is all you knead.
calvin is often wise and mature beyond his years, but it’s still just a good excuse to get out of doing his homework. the really mature thing would be to finish the work and then play.
ocean17: Bill Watterson resolutely refused to go down the t-shirt and coffee mug marketing path throughout his active career and to this day. Practically everything ‘Calvin and Hobbes related’ you see outside of his book compilations and these few sites are pirated material.
The third panel is just a prime example of Bill’s artistic and life wisdom genious. I’m sure it was drawn just to get the point across and complete this one day’s strip and did not have any significant ‘marketing’ undercurrents.
There’s no reason why he can’t do his homework later. Go Calvin!
LuvH8, why do you keep spitting all over the comments? Aren’t you always telling everyone to play nice? “Blowing raspberries” at people isn’t very nice. Walk your talk dear.
I bid 56!
Seriously, Calvin’s idea of “play” is so much more real and healthy than what a lot of kids have nowadays, perhaps because of electronic barrage, increasingly-effective TV ads, and/or more inescapable peer pressure.
Any parent ought to be happy if their kid gets outdoors and creates play after school. Especially with friends and/or fantasy. (I’m not going to quibble about which Hobbes is.)

Calvin, you’re required to grow older. Growing up is optional.
yyyguy about 14 years ago
maturity is when you let the kid inside you out to play - but just until it’s time to do the dishes.

Calvin, the philosopher.

Out of the mouth of a child comes these awesome, simple truths. Perhaps we should communicate with our inner child more often.

The Mortal - welcome! glad you could join!

One of the greatest fallacies that humanity believes is that childhood and maturity are incompatible - either in a child or in an adult.
Sorry, Calvin. I know exactly how you feel, but your choices have consequences no matter what your age. Recognizing that, by definition, is maturity.
That said, keep Ecclesiastes 11:9-10 well in mind, and have fun. :)

LuvH8, we were actually thinking along the same lines. Some people just never grow up.

Maturity can be overrated. Childhood should be wonderful.

You beat me to it mfcoace. All C&H items are not licensed and are pirated. I especially hate the boy peeing on stuff who is made to look like Calvin.
