For some reason around here school is on a different schedule than elsewhere – or at least different than in the comics. I never understand how the schools in comic strips end so early in the year.
School starts the week of Labor Day – used to be Wednesday, but now can be Tuesday in some districts depending on the local school district- except NYC was always the Monday after Labor Day as back then they did have not snow days in NYC so they could give the other 3 days off since if a child did not live near school the subway always ran (only in rather recent years has there been enough snow to shut down same). And the school year runs to the end of June – this year June 25. State mandated exams in high school are the last week or so of school so they cannot shut for the year earlier.
My husband was director of a children’s mental health program which was school and counseling services and they had to meet the school year requirements. Basically they were required to follow the early September to end of June calendar (though at his program they reopened after July 4 for a summer session which went to a week before Labor Day).
As to summers when I went to school – I hated not being in school. Summers were boring.
My parents tried day camp and later when I was older 2 weeks at sleep away camp. When going to the former I would be in my parents bedroom whispering "I don’t want to go in the P-O-O-L and I hated going there. When I went to sleep away camp I would write two letters home daily – one to my parents asking them to come and get me and one to my younger sister telling her to tell my parents to come and get me. (They did not.)
I would spend the other summers reading. The library had a reading program – read a certain number of books over the summer (something like 10 or 12 books) and get a prize (which after the first year I should have realized would always be a certificate of completion). By the end of the second week at the latest I would have finished reading the number of books for the program – something they never seemed to believe. I would then argue with them that the fact that I had not read any fiction books, only non-fiction should not count against me – non-fiction was much more important to read than fiction.
When I was in college I came up a solution to not liking summers off from school. I went to school both summers and graduated a year early – while working 3 part time jobs – my dad during tax season, the college during “making ID cards season” and at a local house goods department store in their jewelry department.

The summer only got longer if you had to spend time with boring old relatives, who didn’t want to do any fun stuff.

When I was in school, several decades ago, summer vacation was from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
