It’s a football joke… a kicker in football tries to kick the ball through the uprights of the goal post; if successful, the kicker’s team gets three points.

I think someone has football withdrawal. (If one is lucky, you can find AFL or CFL games.)

I understood the football analogy, but the first two panels with the bird walking through paint? It escapes me.

Yep, most Sunday strips have a title panel and a second panel, both of which are omitted by many many newspapers.
    .
My major complaint about the practice is that Doonesbury has always been an eight-panel strip and almost every newspaper I have read omits the first two. Dith–picable!

Per the gold paint and the bird walking thru it:
I remember the fun Bugs Bunny had with some rocks and a can of gold paint! He also had a chihuahua named Tinfoil pulling his dogsled.

Still, I don’t see a “tie-in” with the bird and the paint, since it doesn’t connect with the rest of the cartoon. If I were an editor, I’d throw out these first two panels, too!
    .
On the other hand, “Doonesbury” always makes a connection with the main cartoon – in a manner that if the “throw-away” is omitted, it doesn’t detract from the message. But at the same time, there is a legitimate and logical connection. That is not the case here.
