    Portugal tried this and their economy is in WORSE shape than before. Have these guys not seen what happened to Chile and Argentina in the 1980’s?

    Greece: Socialism run rampant by politicians buying votes. The people of Greece are now suffering unemployment, hunger, and deprivation because politicians sucked the life out of the Greek economy by giving more entitlements to the Greek people than their economy could possibly afford. It’s a sad commentary on politicians that they are more concerned about being re-elected than analyzing programs to determine the sustainability of said programs.

    I like the new look for the “Europe character” in today’s strip. The point is also about as close to the truth as you can get in a cartoon with a complicated issue like this. If you could show the life “juice” flowing from Greece to sustain the banks, it would be even closer.

    Two things that seems to be escaping all the righties notice, Greece didnt’ elect a Socialist government until AFTER the debt-crisis broke. Before that, it was a center-right government.

    And Greece also has one of the highest wealth-gaps in Europe,( while Germany has one of the lowest.)

    Yep! Sounds like a good argument for socialism.

    What caused the problems in Europe wasn’t Socialism. It was when their banks gave out free an easy credit. That is what damaged their economies. An austerity will make sure they get fascist leadership to get back order.

    Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad if the rich had paid their taxes.
    We are going down the same rat hole due to tax breaks.

    Just returned from the vet. My dog has fleas. Vet blamed it on Obama and the socialists. My vet is a Republican.

    Are you sure your republican vet didn’t give the fleas to your dog? It is a sure fire way to keep you coming back for a treatment. (Been there, done that with pets.)

    @oquaig

    You are confusing social welfare government with socialism. It’s a common mistake. In Greece there was a socialist government (at least in name and not for that long) but the problem there is much like you said, and much more to do with a) inefficiency, b) cronyism and c) just not collecting the taxes from people who can afford to pay (see a. and b. above)
    .
    It’s hard to tell if EU leaders are concentrating on saving the banks out of cynical self interest or because they just can’t figure out what to do about the underlying problems.
