My wife and I started our life together with $10 to our name and $15K in Student Loan debts. But we worked hard, watched our nickels and dimes, saved aggressively and now we are putting our own children through college so they won’t have student loan debts. We didn’t get hand outs of any kind so I absolutely reject the concept that there is no way to work your way up out of poverty.
In fact it think it is the worst kind of lie out there to tell people “you can’t succeed if the government doesn’t step in and help you”. Telling people that they are worthless and will only have value if the government forces society to accept you is the first step to creating a dependent class.
That safety net looks very similar to a hammock to me.
