With its tortured perspective, gritty realism, and outlandish urban humor, Derf’s The City has kept an outsider’s beat on current events, trends and out-there aspects of contemporary culture since 1990. Whether depicting the coarse insanity of modern urban life or the ultra-clean realm of the feature’s only recurring character - White Middle Class Suburban Man - Derf uses dissonant humor to speak up for what he calls "the common schlub."

The Patriot Acts make “1984” look like a fairy tale. As Samuel Boswell said: “Patriotism is the last refuge of scoundrels.” Now as a US citizen and veteran, don’t get me wrong: I love my country but I’m pretty damn unhappy with its government and the complaisancy of far too many of its citizens.

Finally, someting the Derf and I can squarely agree on. The eventual roundup of US Citizens under the Patriot Act.

Nowadays, patriotism is the first, not last, refuge of the big scoundrels.
