One wonders how many now are familiar with the story from Genesis 48
“13 And Joseph took both of them, Ephraim on his right toward Israel’s left hand and Manasseh on his left toward Israel’s right hand, and brought them close to him. 14 But Israel reached out his right hand and put it on Ephraim’s head, though he was the younger, and crossing his arms, he put his left hand on Manasseh’s head, even though Manasseh was the firstborn.”
There’s more to the passage, but that is what the painting depicts.

Actually, it’s both. Joseph, the father of the two young boys, presenting them to his father Jacob (aka Israel).

Modestly enlarged image can be found at Mr. Melcher’s blog entry. It is a slightly-different-coloration, cropped (frame removed) version, of the click-to-enlarge image found here.

Jacob Blessing Ephraim and Manasseh (links show their Wikipedia pages, Bible verses, enhanced story), is shown, with a different coloration, smaller image, and described, by its current-location page.

A similar-to-its-coloration, maybe-click-to-enlarge image can be found here.

Around the same time, the artist also made a drawing of it, which can be found here. His Wikipedia page and collection (more under Subcategories at each level).

Third, of the 4 works, by this artist, that have, so far, appeared in Mr. Melcher’s blog, to also appear here.

I’ve never heard of anyone using gluten allergies to heal anyone before. But this would have happened WAY back in the day when records were a bit sketchy. Perhaps the King James edition didn’t think it worth including.

“Verily, I say to thee, shouldst thou strike their heads together like so, with a comedic ‘clunk’. And then should the comic relief speaketh ‘nyuk nyuk nyuk’.”
