My favorite bit on clowns was a log entry in the Star Trek Spaceflight Chronology by a circus owner who had been talked into bringing his circus to Vulcan. The vulcans calculated risks of the acrobats, compared animal anatomy, but couldn’t figure out the clowns.

“Don’t Cry Out Loud”, by Melissa Manchester….

As schmaltzy as it is, it has motifs in the lyrics on Circuses, and their Arrival Parade, as does the album cover and liner notes….
