Actally they started with the single panel in a new york paper, the sun?, titled the yellow kid. It doesn’t make much sense either, but it was very topical for the times. Only much later did the comic books come along as collections of the newpaper strips.

I think what is confusing many is that this is an Almanac, which is book of information and advice and ruminations on the coming year by seasons. it predits weather patterns and advisies on planting of crops. As such this would be the page leading into winter.

Oops, this is a page from the Poor Almanac book. Each season gets a drawing of this guy and the tree to herald the season. In context it’s kinda funny. Not hilarious, just kinda funny.
