    Because it has been shown over and over and over again that you can motivate more people to vote against someone (or thing) than you can get them to vote for. Also it is a proven behavioral response that if you disgust voters enough, they won’t go out to vote at all.

    So our system these days is all about suppression and discouragement. We need serious reform where voting is mandatory and paid holidays are declared for voting. And that would be just the start of reforms needed.

    Good idea, Darsan. That idea sure worked well in the old Soviet Union. How about this: maybe the lazy and entrenched people who don’t bother to look at the candidates’ records, and the ones stupid and gullible enough to be swayed by the negative ads should just stay home. Low voter turnout is not always a bad thing. In fact, maybe you should just stay home yourself.

    Mandatory voting? When you tell them they have to vote it becomes easy to tell them who to vote for as well. But as a liberal you would probably be fine with that as well. Paid Holiday? Yes another fine liberal tradition spend someone else’s money. You want more people to vote? Make it mean something. People are tired of voting and when the democrats loose they take it to some liberal judge who declares it unconstitutional. But the same judge and liberals wont do anything about obama illegally changing and delaying obamacare. The president has no authority to delay or change laws, it does not fall under his authority. Why are you not complaining about that?

    @Dave Richard

    Works in Australia. And people tend to make decisions based on emotional reactions waaaaay more often than any rational response. This is a researched neuroscience fact. But realizing you still need to get your elementary school GED, I tried to keep the language simple, like you.

    No, no, no you people are deliberately misunderstanding. Since everyone has a stake, so everyone should have a voice. We should be working to expand the voting base and if we have “force” people into doing civic duty, well that’s how you develop habits. (What would life be like if you let your kids decide whether or not they should dress themselves?- PS trolls, just an illustration.) We should make the time available to people to vote and not be penalized economically for doing their duty. Voting should also be run by an independent public agency and for a limited time to limit the time for negative advertising. We should also be providing free media time with candidates presenting before independent journalists. Also I would really like to see a debate where a proposition is presented and debaters had to take pro/con positions and defend it in limited time periods. Like in high school and college contests. Today we are working way to hard to limit and suppress the vote and I think this is WRONG !!!

    With early voting and voting by mail there are plenty of opportunities for people to vote if the wish to.

    I think you’ve griped about paid holidays before. Right up to the time you actually take one.

    It should be a combination of both. But that does not mean picking on petty negatives. Run on your merit, yes, but if there is truly something bad in the other side’s past then the voters should definitely be aware, such as corruption, major criminal convictions, etc.

    There should be a default program that negates and invalidates all straight party voting because it’s apparent they’re too thick or simple-minded to comprehend individual candidate attributes; and probably haven’t bothered to compare them anyway.
