   Yeah, had a party line in college and one of the kids on the line would pick up the phone while other people were using it and scream, “Mommy, the phone doesn’t work!”

   Repeatedly.

    Remember Party lines? Sure do. Eight on a line. One pore ol’ lady had nothing to do all day but chat with her fellow shut-ins..(sorta the CB radio of its day) Lots of calls from the operator to tell her to GETOFF it, ‘cuz other people were trying to call IN! As late as the middle ’70’s I was on a party line when I moved to Ohio farm territory.
    ‘Cricket" (I think) was the ringers on those first push-button phones..They’d wake you up in the middle of the night with
    “What the heck is THAT noise coming from the kitchen??”
    (or wherever the phone was situated)

    Dial implies a circle, rotation, so touch tone keying is not dialing.
