    re: night gaunt

Not to sound overly grim, but we are overdue for a major cataclysm. We already lose a third of our crops to pestilence (among other reasons, the GMOs help breed them, just as the IPM folks warned 20 years ago), and resistant strains to everything are now commonplace. In the late 1990s, India had a collective heart attack when mumbai had an outbreak of more than 1000 cases of pneumococcal plague. People fled the city and a lot of people prayed they were not carrying it with them to other parts of india. Fortunately, they weren’t, but it could have been the end for millions or even billions. A quarter of the world was estimated to have been exposed to TB in 2000. It’s dumb luck something hasn’t happened yet: someone gets on a plane in NYC with a nasty airborne virus with a long incubation time and the stuff gets spread before we know something’s happened.
    .
Even scarier are GMO diseases like the strain of West Nile that was released here and in Israel. While WN is thankfully not normally fatal, at least one other GMO disease, H1N1 was engineered and let loose. First time I’ve ever seen a virus taken seriously and the measures to prevent its spread worked beautifully. SARS may or may not have been engineered, but it was a warning as to what could happen. Indeed, what happens when someone in the islamic world engineers or steals something that has a month incubation period and high mortality?

Usually we serve white wine with the catch of the day, but this is from the rare redmeat fish.
