We need decriminalization, and a rational policy FEDERAL on pot, but don’t need coke back in Coke. Put the emphasis on the real drugs, and dealers, at the TOP of the food chain, not the users on the bottom.

The most strident opponents of legalization of marijuana has been pharmaceutical companies, liquor companies, and even drug dealers themselves. Prohibition did not work in the 1920s and it has not worked in the years between 1960 and 2014.
Penalties for smoking and driving, smoking in public, and especially for providing cannabis to the still forming minds of minors need to be tough.
I’m glad the Denver Post has a “Pot Critic”. Perhaps it will create a scale by which people can decide if they want the cannabis they smoke/drink/eat will make them functionally high, comfortably numb, or stoned into helplessness.
Do you want a beer that is 3%, 6%, or 12%? Bacardi at 80 proof, or 151?
    Same difference.

Put the emphasis on dealing with actual crimes against persons or property and not on potential harm to persons or property suggested by the presence or use of some substance or another.
The policy of prevention of crime by creating a new class of criminals from those presumed to be potential future actors against the safety and well-being of unspecified persons and property is about as perverse and oppressive as any totalitarian government can get.

That sounds all well and good, but the dealers are only fulfilling a demand. You can jail all the dealers you want, but another will take his place to fill the demand.

Someone complained when I posted a link to a site that said many had died from marijuana, saying I was linking to something not even original. But then, that’s what links are (except those who only link to their own websites).

This link is to a New York Times writer who just thinks the repeal of a beneficial law is a big mistake.

    @Michael wme

The marijuana deaths link is a well-known fake news story. Like the one about Kim Jong Un’s uncle being fed to the dogs.

Please do not forget the private prison corporations. And the prison guard unions.

If it can be grown, legalize and tax. If it has to be processed then de criminalize it and find the user and help them out.
But this strip touches on two thing., One, the over reaction that pot will drive you insane with just one puff and blah blah we all know the hype. But the flip side is just as bad. No you will not go into refer madness but it will take your life. As I stated in another strip, that is why a police officer and a judge is not the way to solve the problem. You smoke pot you are already taking a part of your life and flushing it down. Living in a drug haze is not living. So what can a police guy take from you to convince you otherwise.
Point is, unless both sides come to the conclusion that yes it is a dangerous drug but you can not regulate behavior. It will not be legal in all 50 states.
It will be interesting to see what the police will do with the extra stupid people and there excuse but I was high. So? You were still an idiot and broke other rules. But I was high. So, getting up and being on time to work is how you keep your job. But I was high? so? all those extra pounds from the munchies still make you fat..

I had meant to add that, Eepatt, and have done so in the past. Thank you for filling in a very important blank spot. “For Profit” Prisons are an antithesis to a system that is supposed to be rehabilitating offenders and preparing them for life out of prison. These prison not only take jobs from everyday Americans who are looking for work, but they make it harder for released inmates to find work once they return to freedom.
    Thank you very much.

So are you ok with alcohol?
Alcoholism takes part of your life and flushes it down. Living in a drunken stupor is not living.
If you are of the belief that alcohol is bad and will take your life… then you are consistent, and that’s fine. If you think alcohol is not a problem for people or society… then your argument goes out the window.

LOVE the toon…I can remember watching “Refer Madness” with a bunch of college buddies back in the early 80’s at one of those midnight movie nights.

So are you ok with alcohol? "
I think both should be legal. But if you think they are the same you are part of the problem in getting Dope Legal. For starters Alcohol is water based and gets flushed out of the system. THC is a drug with a 22 hour half life that has to be filtered out of the body and can hide in fat. Both do make you stupid but in very different ways. THC does it’s magic by changing the brain chemistry. And that can be long term and long lasting. Alcohol is damaging in over use and long term. Those that abuse both will suffer. But THC is meant to be abused and the preferred effects are when you do use even a little. Where as alcohol can be used in very low moderation and get the “benefits” by say 1 drink as opposed to 1 joint.

Oregon “medical marijuana” allows “grow your own”, and with my multiple conditions, and the fact “commercial drugs” have more side effects than benefits, I’m looking into it again. IF the feds drop their ridiculous description of marijuana as a class I, and states maintain class II (it’s NOT a narcotic!) and legalize GROW YOUR OWN, what will the cost of the product do? They’re now charging $100 a gram, when I was in college, it was $100 for a “brick”, or kilogram!

Legalize commercial hemp for paper, fabric, oils etc (like motor fuel as well) and also take the excess profit out of the smokeable variety.

When I say stop the dealers of the true HARD drugs, like meth, opiates, and illegally marketed pharmas like Oxy, I mean make the dealers ingest whatever they have as product! On the spot! and book them into the morgue, and take that policy to the top, and we might find more than a few prominent “respected businessmen” , like, CEOs of pharmaceutical companies, and congresspersons, and other government officials, taking a “nap” on stainless steel.
