    Going to go out on a limb and guess that ubermick has never run a business that provided employment to anyone.

    A little bit of sun, a little bit of rain, a little bit of love, a little bit of pain. Let the rock roll down the mountain, and do it all again.

    She shattered it all right. So much so that it would be the last time a woman ends up as PM.

    Come on, Thatcher was the best thing to happen to Britain since Churchill.

    Humans are humans. We’ve never been very good or very bright. But at least we’re noisy and argumentative! I only seek world peace when I seek global domination without opposition, but that’s just me.

    @ScottPM: Instead of comparing Britain to Greece, why not compare it to Germany? A country where they still have a manufacturing base and a smaller disparity between rich and poor.

    @Xavier Sartre

    The disparity between rich and poor is relative and meaningless. The difference between starving and living well is neither relative nor meaningless. If the poor are not starving and are actually living quite well, does it really matter that somebody else has more wealth unless one is a raging lunatic? Not channeling all wealth through the capital may fix all that is wrong with capitalism in practice, and hang the theory.

    It most certainly does matter, BrassOrchid. Societies with greater disparities between rich and poor have more crime for a start. Compare Sweden and Japan to the USA and Brazil. For “society” to have any meaning there must be a feeling that we are all in this together. That doesn’t happen when the rich live in security-patrolled enclaves.

    Well certainly there was less poverty after the time when Thatcher was in office, but there was also more wealth, which is just unfair and can only lead to more criminal behavior. Man, can people even hear themselves anymore? Criminals only commit their crimes from class envy? This is why social science is not a hard science. It is pure fabrication and wishful thinking.
