We always take care of our workers. If there’s anything left over that we can’t use we give it to them. (Ever hear of chitlins?)

If they’re not full time, Walmart pays no benefits (vacation, sick time, holidays, health insurance, etc) – just min wage.

Sam Walton MUST be spinning in his grave at what his greedy kids have done to his company!

Bravo! This is exactly what has been going wrong with our country for the last 30 years. Keep letting the Republicans take away labor clout and we’ll be back to the misery of the 19th Century.
Wal-Mart is far from the only retailer doing this kind of thing, but they have been the ones leading the way in order to beat the competition by a few cents.

State and Federal laws give businesses lower tax rates if they hire part time workers… that is one of the reasons it is so hard to find full time work. It is also an excise not to provide benefits. Even though you can’t support yourself with one part time job, many employers insist you only work for them. How dumb is that ?

When my dad was a negotiator for the Newspaper Guild — way way way back when — he did a lot of research and demonstrated that the wage the paper paid to its entry level reporters (cub reporters) no one could live on — as the term is, it wasn’t a living wage. So he presented all of his statistics during the negotiating session, and at the end of his presentation, the employer said, “Well, that was very interesting, but whatever gave you the impression I thought I was paying a living wage?”

1. For all full time employees, employers must pay half the payroll taxes. These taxes have been temporarily slashed, but half is still half.
2. For now, most executives have a hard time self-insuring, the costs are exorbitant and coverage is limited. Federal law allows the company to deduct the full cost of providing healthcare to owner-employees and executives only if the same healthcare is provided to all full-time employees.

There are prisons in the USA who are operated by private corporations trading on the US Stock Exchange. They make prisoners pay for their own incarceration manufacturing clothing and such. Prisoners are also paid an amount that makes a laborer doing the same job in China look like a US Union Member- though even they don’t get compensated like they used to. I wonder how many companies are selling Made in the USA products made by a person in jail for shoplifting food for a family. I wonder what US companies or state agencies are buying the products.
Wal Mart has great prices, but it also has great profits. Why can’t they pay people better? Why can’t they spend a little more to buy from American companies and locally where possible? Why do the executives and stockholders get so much money that workers in stores AND overseas have to endure subsistence wages or less. And poor Americans desperately need low priced items.
Wal mart will probably overcome.
Buy local if you can and when you can.
Respectfully,
& Happy Holidayze,
C.
