The Homeland Security ammo purchase sounds like a lot, except it’s a 5 year contract. They are not actually stockpiling ammo.

The purchases come out to 667 rounds per year for each person who carries a gun for routine duty. Let me ask the people who are gun enthusiasts: does this sound like far more than they should need if they are spending regular time practicing & training at a target range?

They only need to shoot two people a day.
    Sounds like light duty.

Where did you get your 667 rounds per year figure? 1.6 Billion rounds were bought. That would mean there are almost 500k employees of Homeland Security and that they all carry guns as part of their job. Both of which are wrong.

Anyways, purchases like this (and others recently) make the prez look less than truthful when he says they have to release illegal aliens already in custody due to future cuts in increased spending. Don’t you think?

Overload the system. If te Feds have the bullies, the people don’t. If they can’t take away the guns they’ll make owning them expensive.

Homeland Security is listed as having 200,000 employees. That 200,000 number includes secretaries, receptionists, file clerks, etc. That comes to 8000 rounds per employee. If it’s a five year contract that’s 1600 rounds per year per employee, armed or not. If the numbers I found are correct (and my math), it begs the question, “Why in the world do you need all of that ammunition?”.

“This to us is something that we’re not going to give up on, because we’re not going to give up on destroying the health care system for the American people.” Paul Ryan — being the latest statement he’ll be saying he didn’t REALLY say, or didn’t intend to say or something. Is the Homeland secure then, Paul??

There is only one reason ANY government would buy this massive quantity of bullets for non- military use. They are preparing for an uprising. They think they will need it to suppress the armed (and unarmed) populace. Reason as you will – There is NO other explanation. BTW: Hollow points are NOT generally used for target practice.

Yeah. If there’s any truth to this, the DHS is retarded. Makes me want to backhand an official.

“There is only one reason ANY government would buy this massive quantity of bullets for non- military use. They are preparing for an uprising.”

Agreed. Might this have to do with the continuous yammering by reserved and well-educated individuals who respond to calls for safe and sane gun ownership by saying they want to be ready to take down the government? And recent record gun sales, especially ultra-destructive ones?

I think this is an over-reaction, but I recognize the security risk these people are working to create. Go to Facebook or just about anywhere and you see the hate and distrust. Not reasoned disagreement, real hate. I felt even less comfortable with Dubya in the White House, but wasn’t ready to start a revolution.

The NRA, Fox, and the Republican party have been rabble-rousing for years. They’ve gotten good at it. Sarah Palin had people yelling, “Kill him” at rallies. Rick Santorum was standing in front of a target at a gun range answering questions, when a woman in the background said of the target, “Pretend it’s Obama.” He heard, but did nothing.

Regardless of your political leanings, put yourself in Mr. Obama’s place for a minute. You certainly can’t say that everyone against him are racist. But you can’t deny that every racist in the country wouldn’t mind having a clear shot at him. And that part is not limited to racists. And remember that almost all of these people have almost unlimited access to weapons.

wow… yet the posturing continued for the rest of the thread… the level of intentional ignorance amazing. To repeat your post:

    http://www.politifact.com/texas/statements/2012/apr/30/chain-email/chain-email-says-homeland-security-purchasing-many/

Homeland Security has contracted to buy up to 450 million .40-caliber bullets — and that total exceeds the nation’s population. Significantly, though, the purchase contract covers five years; there’s no indication the agency is piling up the bullets in a hurry.

More significantly, we found nothing to support the email’s ominous suggestions. Rather, the large size of the contract is explained as a way for the government to buy in bulk to save money on ammunition used routinely for training officers in a wide variety of agencies.

We rate the email Mostly False.
