I didn’t see anything in the news reports that said the pilots were going to be allowed to use their cell phones.

Not to mention that most commercial flights also have a co-pilot.

As a passenger, texting while flying is something I would support. Talking on the cell phone while flying would be a nightmare, just like a baby crying.

Most passengers would be completely unnerved of they knew what actually happens in the cockpit. The issue with the pilots who got busted for sleeping was that they overslept and overshot the destination by a couple hundred miles. The days of a pilot manually controlling flight from take off to landing have been over for decades. Technology has reduced the workload and reduced the flight crew on an airliner from 5 down to 2.

Tigger, had a Southern Airways flight miss the airport, years ago, long before cell phones, and they were in a Martin 404, not on autopilot. The FAA guys met us at the gate when we landed and pulled the pilots tickets. (There were other “problems” on that flight as well, like taking off anyway when the mechanics told them the brakes weren’t working properly.)

"You do not live on Planet Earth

    You are unnecessarily snide.
    1) There is a difference between using a laptop and using a cell phone.
2)One can live on planet Earth without watching NBC News. The newspaper articles I read did not say anything about pilots being able to use their cell phone.
