    Hard to imagine that there were no inspections of that tank for such a long period, either by the EPA or the company. Also, did this tank have no dikes?

    Back when I was in the USAF back in the 60’s, the JP4 (jet fuel) tanks all had dikes around them. During a raging blizzard one night (northern Michigan) static electricity caused one to explode. The dike contained the spilled burning fuel preventing it from spreading to other tanks and a nearby power company substation.

    The Alyeska 48" pipeline across Alaska has dikes around all the pump stations as well as the holding tanks.
    .
    It all depends on the willingness of the regulators to take their jobs serious.
    Spills happen, the dikes have saved a major amount damage many times since the pipeline was built.

    No problems in Alaska, how is your state doing?

    I was just a little surprised when they said methanol (wood alcohol) with high toxicity, is not considered “hazardous material”. Of course, living and working where they do heap leach gold processing, and seeing those trucks loaded with cyanide never leads me to believe that’s hazardous either??

    @NeoconMan

    It’s great America has so many unregulated chemicals, and so little oversight! The GOP Congressmen sure have done a great job of deregulating industry!

    Hmmm, I went to T.J. back when Colorado still had pine forests.

    Not to worry, ahab. When enough people die to cut into profits, the Invisible Hand of the Market will suggest they stop killing customers.
