The only problem I have with gay marriage is one of semantics. Marriage implies procreation and that’s where the rub comes in.
If I were a legislator, I would propose a law to establish “Legal Equivalent of Spouse” which is a contract between any two people. It is more encompassing than a marriage. It could be between a daughter and her dependent mother, it could be a brother and sister who outlived their spouses, or it could be between two total strangers.
The partners in the contract will be considered in the same legal status as a husband and wife for the purposes of taxation, inheritance, liabilities, benefits, next of kin, etc.
If the two people want the contract blessed by a priest, shaman, minister, imir, rabbi or druid guru, that’s their business, not the state’s. If they want to throw a big party and invite all their friends, that’s their business, not the state’s. I they want to live together, that’s their business, not the state’s.
