Homosexuality doesn’t turn me on, and it doesn’t turn me off. It’s just something other people do. On the scale of all the things that other people do that’s none of my business, it’s harmless.
I have enough trouble leading my own life. I don’t need to take on the responsibility of telling everyone else how to live theirs. I’m not God and I am under no delusion that he delegated this job to me.
Gay Marriage? Great. Now, can I have a Traditional Old Testament marriage to 4 or 5 wives? With the extra income, I could buy a Really Nice House for all of us..
The only problem I have with gay marriage is one of semantics. Marriage implies procreation and that’s where the rub comes in.
If I were a legislator, I would propose a law to establish “Legal Equivalent of Spouse” which is a contract between any two people. It is more encompassing than a marriage. It could be between a daughter and her dependent mother, it could be a brother and sister who outlived their spouses, or it could be between two total strangers.
The partners in the contract will be considered in the same legal status as a husband and wife for the purposes of taxation, inheritance, liabilities, benefits, next of kin, etc.
If the two people want the contract blessed by a priest, shaman, minister, imir, rabbi or druid guru, that’s their business, not the state’s. If they want to throw a big party and invite all their friends, that’s their business, not the state’s. I they want to live together, that’s their business, not the state’s.
The other issue I have with gay marriage is the inconsistency with state laws. My wife and I were married in New York State. Our marriage has been recognized in every state we’ve ever lived in. We did not have to get remarried when moving to a new state. I can’t say that much for my driver’s license.
So if a gay couple gets married in a state where it is legally recognized and moves to another state where heterosexual marriages of out-of-staters is recognized, then the union must be recognized.
Either that, or every couple coming in from out of state has to get remarried (think tax revenue Bubba) or be considered living in sin.
