    I didn’t think Grant was crooked. He died almost in poverty; he had to write his biography to help support his family.

    You’re absolutely correct. Grant was scrupulously honest – but naive. His cabinet was notoriously corrupt. He driven to poverty because he trusted his own son and his son’s business partner too much.
