The philosophy professor remarked that, while it was well known that a double negative yielded a positive, there was no known instance of a double positive yielding a negative. From the back of the classroom came a bored voice: “Yeah, right!”.

He needs one of those chairs Thomas Edison invented, with the extra part on them so they can’t tilt too far back..

    Maybe…
if the gum were actually a high-strength balloon,
if he exhaled helium or very hot air,
and if he weighed less than five pounds.

I think that was just a thing they made up in the Simpsons. But I suppose you’d be the authority on that!

I don’t know if that one is real or not, but Edison came up with thousands of inventions. Most didn’t make the market. Some had only a limited market. One of the more interesting ones was a concrete house (way ahead of it’s time) that was far cheaper to build than a wood house.

One of my classroom rules (way back in my teaching days) was “Six feet on the floor: two of your own and four of the chair’s”. Only had one kid flip backwards from not following it: the rest of the class caught on quickly.

I had a prof (a very good one) who was chuckling “I can’t believe I’m paid to do this”, my audible reply was “Me, neither.” What was the result…double negative yields a positive; he was tough, but we liked him.

I tell my students to not lean back because I do not have time to fill out an accident report and I do not want blood on my carpet… :)
