Since its debut in 1979, For Better or For Worse has touched comic strip readers as few cartoons ever do. Cartoonist Lynn Johnston’s eye for detail and her uncanny sense of what real parents and children struggle with daily are a big part of her success. The world has watched the Patterson family grow up in real time, and to many readers, the Pattersons feel like family!
Parents and children alike will relate to the obstacles that the Patterson family faces. Curfews, parent date nights, babysitting, pets and distractions are all hurdles that the Pattersons must overcome in order to enjoy each other as a family. They face the same obstacles that real life families do, which is what makes them so loveable.

If you go to Lynn Johnston’s website and use her Comics Archive and search for “Brad” to see all the Brad Luggsworth comic strips coming up in the next few years, you will find that Michael’s prediction about Brad is not going to come true. While this is sad news for Michael, it’s got to be great news for his friends, who appear to enjoy watching Michael getting beat up.

That’s Gordon for ya’. He just happened to be Mike’s bestman at his wedding….in later years.

@howtheduck
Thanx for the info.
I hope that in the later strips, adults will finally get involved in ending bullying.

The denoument of this story arc is just too “pat”.
I’ll never believe that being “nice” (i.e. “kowtowing”) to bullies will ever change them.
RIP, Larry Hagman.

It has never worked that way!

Lynn’s Notes:
I remember taking my mother’s advice and being nice to one of the kids I “hated.” It worked like a charm. After my enemy was certain that my efforts were genuine, the feud ended. This didn’t keep me from fighting, though. I still needed the occasional pounding… and I gave a few in return. It’s interesting to know now, having talked to some of the kids with whom I had serious differences, that we had all come from families where discipline was strong and physical. If “a pounding” was commonplace at home, then this is how we resolved our differences outside!

Look at Lynn’s observation as to how bullies are made. it all starts at home. But each person is different so they won’t have all been produced exactly the same way.

Maybe Brad and Mike can bully them.

@psychlady
Ridiculous!
There’re games to play, things to make, places to go, lots of stuff in childhood. It doesn’t take watching what bullies do. Bullies and bullying are totally useless and worthless.

Lawrence was Mike’s best man, over the objections of Deanna’s mother. And Brad became a police officer.
