Abuse of authority. He stood between players and their scholarships.

I heard his “apology” on the radio this morning. Very tearful, very emotional, very remorseful. So where was all this when he was flinging basketballs and homophobic slurs at his players?
Like all bullies, he’s only sad that he got punished.

When the New York Times ran a version of this story that allowed comments, one comment was by someone who said he was on many athletic teams, some with coaches who respected the players and some with coaches like Rice. He said the teams coached by coaches like Rice won more than the other teams. (Of course, we have no way of knowing if he was telling the truth.)

Unless the AD goes too, and quickly, it is just one more sham. The system will give him a few months, maybe a season, for all to forget and Rice will be offered another job.

This is empirical only, but if you look at Bobby Knight’s career as a coach, he is one shining example. He even slapped his own son on national TV and threw chairs on the court at times. Interestingly, almost none of his players made it to the NBA, and even fewer played significant minutes.

I think the coach should run a gauntlet of his alumni players, each armed with two basketballs, and Rice sans protective gear.

Quite some time ago, many of us saw a coach that could win more consistently that any other coach in college history, in Coach John Wooden of UCLA. And I never saw that truly great man get even angry at opposing players let alone his own. The current situation in sports in general seems to me to be very sad!
