Mark: How to explain Clinton's growing approval ratings? Could it be a moderate conspiracy? We're back! To help us better understand the right-wing conspiracy to unseat Clinton...I'm happy to welcome my old pal Vernon Sledge, executive director of the successful left-wing conspiracy that brought down Nixon! Thanks for coming in, Vern! Vernon Sledge: My great pleasure, Mark! Mark: So tell us a little about your team, Vern. You must have been very organized! Vernon Sledge: Well, not really. This was in the days before e-mail and voice mail. Communications were very primitive... We lived in constant fear of being tapped. We would get in touch with each other through personal ads in the New York Review of Books. And, of course, Nixon blamed all his misfortunes on us. His public attacks made it very hard to recruit the anti-war activists, Cambridge professors, jews, blacks and media figures who were the livlihood of the conspiracy. Mark: So when did it turn around for you? Vernon Sledge: I think it was when the Supreme Court joined us.
