The school of hard knocks. Someday, someone ought to have a long talk with that boy.

Funny, I just heard a radio program with a naturalist talking about woodpeckers. The rapid hammering that you hear isn’t to get food but to attract the attention of potential mates. The louder it is, the better. Who knows? Maybe the metal might make a louder noise. Metal music seems to work with young humans.

cdward — That’s right! I signed in to say nearly the same thing, except that it’s to claim territory, not just attract mates. We live in a wild bird refuge and see and hear several varieties of woodpeckers often.

This is very similar to the comic a few days ago, where the woodpecker was pecking on the leg of an elephant … and most of you claimed it was ‘unrealistic’. … now this is a good one? Yeesh. L

Needs this sound effect. I found one that would have played here but the site was so slow, linking it would have been pretty useless.AllanVS, I don’t remember seeing that part of the discussion but if it happens again, tell ‘em about oxpeckers:Though even then it’s somewhat unrealistic because unlike lots of other animals, elephants don’t like ’em and will make them leave.

He’s hard-headed too. Stubborn as a woodpecker pecking a metal lamp post.

I saw it for real when I lived in Florida. I was awaken one morning by this terrible rata-tat-tat going on. I got up and looked outside and there was a Woodpecker pecking away on a metal gutter on the house!

Flickers used to peck away on our pine siding. It’s been replaced with vinyl. (Although, at the time, we used spray bird deterrant.)
