There’s female (and male) cross country during football season. I’m sure there are other female sports played during this time of the year (field hockey maybe).

Girls volleyball is usually played in the fall in the NCAA and many high schools.

Realistically the kid would have instantly joined the soccer team right off the bat. Unless with them being the defending champs they rejected him.
