I don’t much care for churches in my casserole, but if you’ll stop exercising in your red skivvies, I’ll stop watching pigeons getting it on.

I understand this as Beetle Bailey suffered for our sins and those of the pigeons.

“You are old, Father William,” the young man said,“And your hair has become very white; And yet you incessantly stand on your head—Do you think, at your age, it is right?”

“In my youth,” Father William replied to his son,“I feared it might injure the brain; But now that I’m perfectly sure I have none,Why, I do it again and again.” -Lewis Carroll

Blog hospital bill: $147.10 in 1951 is equal to $1298.32 in 2012. That was still a real bargain in comparison.

The photo of Wauxie Haury is estimated to date from about 1897. It’s part of a before-and-after pair of photographs. This one shows her on her arrival at an Indian boarding school; the second shows her on her wedding day, dressed in white with her husband in a black suit and white tie. These before and after sets were common at the boarding schools; Wauxie Haury’s set is included here:

More information and links about Indian boarding schools are on Wikipedia:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Native_American_boarding_schools

Until roughly 1970 the goal of these schools was to forcibly assimilate Indians into white culture, without parental consent. The physical standards at these schools were low even by the standards of the late nineteenth century. (The so-called melting pot of American society has always had a conformist insistence on melting into a Western European mold, but the schools went far beyond what you might have expected if you were an emigre from Eastern Europe or Ireland.)

She obviously has a long and flexible neck to get her head in that position. Not to mention a rather flexible spine!

Chicken church casserole actually isn’t to bad. I add a little Tony Chachere’s original Creole seasoning instead of salt and add a finely chopped jalepeno pepper to give it a little kick.

She has an inverted spine, a rare condition in which the patient’s spine is upside down. The tailbone is between the shoulders, the ribs cradle the intestines, and the head is adjacent to the anus. While the condition can be from birth, it’s usually acquired later in life, and often without the patient’s knowledge.

One term for the railing outside a window is balustrade.

I feel the appropriate response when you don’t understand Frog Applause is to send Teresa an angry, grammatically unsound message, from a throw-away e-mail address.

Ingsoc is correct – Balustrade is a row of Balusters – often on a balconet (most commonly on a staircase supporting the banister) , though the one in the photo does not feature a balustrade. I would call it rococo style but there is probably a more specific term for the style.
