    Night-Gaunt — a carousel slide projector.

SimpsonFan was making a joke…. a slide show is like primitive Powerpoint.I’m surprised Gene didn’t recognise the old projector, if they took slides when he was younger.

It turns out this is a major problem for The Smithsonian, and The Chicago Museum of Technology, and other savers of history. You can’t just save an LP record, you have to save all the related technology that allows you to play it. Now, you don’t have to go all the way and wrap a Mustang around an 8 Track, (Although that would be cool and would be worth a lot of style points…), but you get the idea. Want a job? Learn how to keep Beta players running for The Smithsonian…..

This device isn’t a spaceship, it’s a time machine. It goes backwards, and forwards… it takes us to a place where we ache to go again. It’s not called the wheel, it’s called the carousel. It let’s us travel the way a child travels – around and around, and back home again, to a place where we know are loved.

I love the fact that A&J is not static in time like many other strips. Good to grow older with a comic.

“27 years in school” You want reality, please don’t read comic strips. Compared to Little Orphan Annie and Dondi, this strip is flyin’ by. Yes, I’m thrilled it’s not static. And especiallly that little touches like a carousel projector are significant.

@sox55: haven’t you noticed? Those colorful Kodachrome, Ektachrome, Agfachrome and Fujichrome slides have all chemically deteriorated into next to nothingness? If caught in time, they can be digitally converted.

I have boxes of lovely slides, taken all around the Mediterranean, that I need to get converted to disc. I keep missing the sales on the machines. Going to have to bite the bullet and pay full price for one before it’s too late.

I’ve only been reading this strip for a little while, but I gather that Gene dropped out of college for a while and only recently went back. From K thru college would be a minimum of 17 years. It’s not unusual to take 5 or more years instead of 4 + the drop-out time, the dates may not be far off at all.

My family lost all of our history pictures, dozens of reels plus many, many boxes of slides dating back to before WWII when my brother was digitizing them and hurricane Ike washed his home away.

My Kodachrome slides are pretty good, but Ectachrome and the rest not too hot. There were different flavors of Ectachrome after the initial faded very fast.

I still have my carousel projector—and it’s in working order, too! (Although the slides have long since been copied to the Web…)

I remember sitting in a darkened room, looking at vacation slides projected on a white wall. 60’s 70’s. But just tonight, I looked at pictures of my sister’s vacation on a big screen TV. Difference? The room wasn’t dark. What goes around comes around. Just like a slide carousel…..

The wheel is turnin’ and you can’t slow down,You can’t let go and you can’t hang on. You can’t go back, and you can’t stand still. If the thunder don’t get you than the lightning will…..
