i don’t believe they eat them when they are adults, but rather when they are both larvae

As kids, we were told dragon flies would sew your lips together…They don’t do they?

They eat mosquito larvae when nymphs (living in the water), adult mosquitos when adults (flying through the air.) Of course, that’s not all they eat.Dragonflies have no way of piercing your lips, and no thread with which to sew, or glue with which to stick them together.

One evening this summer I found myself in the center of a swarm of dragonflies AND several bats! It was really cool, and no, the bats were not eating the dragonflies.

Ugh! She’s sooooo not a tomboy! I was, and I have great memories of WHERE I used to see dragonflies the most. :)

I’m 80 yrs old and the only time I heard of the dragonfly sewing your lips together was when Snoopy told that to Woodstock several years ago. As a grandmother and great-grandmother I have passed this wisdom on to the youth of today!

comicsfan, if you’ve ever read Big Two Hearted River, by Hemingway, you are probably aware of a sly joke at the end of the first nights camp. He’s camped by a river in the UP. And as he going to bed he kills a mosquito that has been bugging him. Yup. ONE mosquito. In the UP. It was really the fox River near Seeney, but still…….Um….did I mention he was only having trouble with only ONE mosquito? Man, I go up there a lot. I’ve counted a lot more than ONE mosquito. You can kill them 4 at a time just swatting randomly at one of your limbs.. I didn’t catch the joke until the second time I read it. But I think it’s playful genius. An inside joke to fishermen or other sportspersons….

Dragonflies can’t sew your lips together, but some of the biggest ones are still called “Darners” in recognition of the legend.

I remember once being in the middle of a “cauldron” of bats (really, I looked it up) who were swarming(?) at about 6 to 10 feet off the ground. One of the coolest things I’d ever seen!
