I hope that not too many people who read is site and newspapers where this strip appears are made to feel unincouded by the overt religious themes. Not very respectful to some members of the community and I think that’s sad…
I don’t think the discovery of the “god” particle is going to make any difference either theists or non-theists. Personally, I just hold with “I have no need for that hypothesis” and leave it there. I am, however, totally awestruck by the immensity and beauty of the universe. What really impresses me these days is the discovery of lots of planets out there.
It is precisely the need for a physical form of a “supreme being” that weakens the argument for it having any power, or existence, at all, as depicted in the myths from the “book of hate”. Creating such a force in “our” image is what weakens the argument completely.
I was quoting what Laplace supposedly said to Napoleon (though the story is probably apocryphal). Some are happy to keep searching for the answers, and they feel that recourse to divinity stops the search before the answer has been found. Others feel that the extent of the unanswered questions demands something bigger. As I said, by temperament, I’m with those who don’t need the hypothesis. And of course there are those who are not in the business of searching at all, because they think they know the answer.
No scientist working on this project has referred to the HB as a “god particle”, it is as much a figment of journalism as much as “missing link”. What the world really needs are journos (and cartoonists) with educations in science.
“would you ¿REALLY want to live in libocrud dictatorship, where someone else decides what is good for you?”-——We already have that. Check out what the automobile industry had to go through to give the illusion of safety. Autos are indeed safer, but they still kill people in collisions. The republicans want to control aspects of peoples’ lives that they don’t belong in. Marriage equality jumps to mind. A woman’s body is inspected now in certain places because of republicans creating new laws.
You may dislike some of the things that Democrats do, may not like paying taxes to help feed the hungry, take care of the sick. I don’t like the taxes I pay to be used for war, but they are.
You right to swing your fist about ends before it hits someone else. It is not okay to yell fire in a crowded space.
Living with other people, we all must make compromises.

Thank you Stephen for being the intelligence in the room. We really are shifting from religious superstitions to a grown up world. about time!

A little skewed, Joe. Perhaps it escaped you, but the research wasn’t done, and the announcement made in Europe.
