I've always been able to read. No, you haven't. You just don't remember learning. I remember learning to ride my bike! Why wouldn't I remember learning to read? That's different. You didn't fall off the book.
Lucky Larry. Found a pen with ink. Poor Sarah. Will find a shirt with ink. :).Toby can’t remember because he hasn’t yet fallen into a book. I remember before the start of grade 1 of getting Archie comic books and trying to ‘read’ the funny pages in the newspaper. .The excitment of learning to read Run Spot Run wore off quickly when I got my first Beatrix Potter book.
First day of 1st grade, the teacher gave me a book to take home and read. So, I took it home and read it. Brought it back the next day and asked for another one. She didn’t believe I’d read the whole thing (it was supposed to take several weeks). I had to read some of it to her to prove I could read it. She reluctantly gave me the next one with instructions not to read it all that night. I did anyway, but didn’t tell her so.
When my oldest daughter was almost five, I was reading “The Little House on the Prairie” to her at bedtime. After about a week of this, to my surprise she pretty much turned the table and started reading it to me instead. Now, I had been playing alphabet games with her for a little while, but not much actual reading practice, beyond about a dozen or so two- and three-letter words (hadn’t gotten to the four-letter ones yet). Daddy was pleasantly gobsmacked.

Larry, I’ve got some bad news from a place close to your heart: your shirt pocket!

All I remember of my preliterate days was handing a book to an older cousin and saying, “Reed, read!”

I remember learning to read. Could already read by first grade.
Luckily, I’ve never suffered the ink leak onto my shirt.
