Just another perspective. The straw man is a ventriloquist, the man to his left is the dummy.

Two possible metaphors, straw man & straw poll. I think the former is what wiley is going for. The straw man is a common, if rather deceptive, debaters trick – used all the time in political arguments.

I don’t think all statements on politics and religion are worthless or self absorbed. It’s often interesting and it’s actually a big part of Wiley’s strip. If anything, cartoonists like Wiley and Garry Trudeau are to blame more than most commenters for instigating political discussion.

Most arguers of politics (or religion) seem to use earplugs instead. Very little listening on either side.

In political debates, the ever-ready scarecrow will spread fear and panic and insure the debate deteriorates into hysteria. “Reasonable discussion of the issues” is as rare as The Wiz’s scarecrow (remember who played him in The Wiz? Pretty rare nowadays…yes, tasteless humor…please forgive me).

There are three sides to every story: your side, their side, and the side of the truth.

The foolish person is on their own side.

The wise person chooses to be on the side of the truth.

The clever person chooses the truth to be on their side.

We suspect you are very clever, Ingsoc.

Ahh, the abyss… It is a great and terrible place, a place of beginnings and endings, of life and death, of ultimate truth and lies. If you find yourself on the Path, pop ‘round some time, I’ve got a place there…

“Religion is a Personal Choice, and a Freedom of Choice based on Religion is up to the Individual….”

Those choices depends heavily on one’s country of birth. For those countries in which it is a choice, the religiosity of one’s parents before one learns to form one’s own opinions on such matters is the limiting factor.
