about ‘stealing’ ideas: you can’t copyright them, only their unique expression. at one extreme end of the argument is anyone like a religious convert is plagiarizing ‘the truth’ and at the other we’re all too free to need anyone to ever be creative

I totally agree. I have cartoons ideas that are 20 years old that pop up on occassion. It is interesting to see other cartoonist view of similar gags.

Dan Piraro often mentions the subject of “idea theft” in his blogs, and he makes the point that when coming 365 new ideas every year, artists are bound to have similar ideas for themed events,such as Thanksgiving, St. Patrick’s Day, Christmas, Easter and the like. Since most of the content is submitted to the syndicate weeks in advance, it’s purely coincidence when two ideas so close, or just great minds thinking alike.
